Making electronics legible through light

Making electronics legible through light

Hidden complexity

Most everyday products conceal the systems that make them work. That distance makes electronics feel intimidating and turns curiosity into passive use.

Curiosity forward

Trace turns assembly into the experience. A transparent, modular object reveals power, control, and light flow while remaining durable, approachable, and visually refined.

What I learned making Trace

Trace is an educational self-assembly lamp designed to make electronics visible, understandable, and inviting to explore. Every component becomes part of the product’s visual language.

Curiosity Forward

The assembly process encourages users to investigate how each component contributes to the completed lamp.

Designed with Potential

Consolidating the electronics onto one board creates a durable, understandable system designed for long-term use.

Designed for long-term use

A durable, understandable object that makes every component part of the experience.

The final outcome

Final reflection

Trace pushed me beyond product form and into electrical design, PCB layout, component selection, prototyping, and manufacturing constraints. It reinforced how technical systems can become part of a product’s identity rather than something that must be hidden.
